Rosh Hashana appleTonight is the beginning of the Jewish New Year holidays. Rosh Hashana is a two day holiday during which we pray, eat and enjoy time with friends and family. This year, the holiday extends into Shabbat (Saturday), making it a three-day holiday. So we will not be posting any material here on israelplug until Sunday.

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy New Year, and may we all be blessed with a year of peace, health, happiness and prosperity!

Shana tova - happy New Year! Enjoy the apples and the honey!

Indian flagVijay Anand at Startup Musings interviewed Vishal Gondal, CEO of Indiagames.com, and asked him how US and Israeli startups have been so successful in establishing their “value proposition,” when India struggles with this issue.

ebayA Conservative Miami synagogue is auctioning off two lifetime front row seats on eBay for $1.8m, ynet news has reported. In return for handing over the dough, the buyer gets to have their names engraved on the seats, free parking, and free prayer accessories like a tallit and kippah.

Sounds more like buying seasons tickets than participating in a solemn spiritual experience. But behold - ye Conservative Rabbi knoweth what he doth do! He says they did this to encourage the unaffiliated to participate in the High Holiday ceremonies. Wow - religion using social media and Web 2.0 to market their beliefs! israelogo100.gifAs Israel nears senior citizenship, it has decided to get a face-lift in the form of a new logo for its 60th birthday coming up in May ‘08. The logo, selected by officials, depicts a kid with messy hair throwing a ribbon that turns into the number 60. This logo looks like every other Israel logo I’ve seen, and reminds me more of the 60’s itself than current day, hi-tech Israel. It seems that others weren’t in love with this logo either. Walla.com took a reader poll to see which logo the people would have chosen. You guessed it, the people (1,173 voters) chose otherwise. Read more»

BusinessWeek and Wired - slight delay on traffic technology report

Reading today’s BusinessWeek and Wired online magazines, I was surprised to find it took these cutting-edge magazines over four months to report on the Technion-created traffic technology that we covered back in April. My question is this, why did it take so long and why the sudden interest? Are the magazines slacking on the latest technologies? Or, are American roads catching up to Israel’s notorious reckless driving and illogical traffic patterns? When completed, the technology is set to prevent accidents at intersections by delaying the signals if necessary. You can read more in our earlier post.

Currently listed as one of CNN’s hot topics is the search for Steve Fossett, the US Aviator whose airplane fell in Nevada, but has yet to be recovered. In an effort to bring awareness to this cause and help find Fossett, the Israel News Agency has come up with a clever SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy. They used the headline “Google, Paris Hilton, Ebay, Britney Spears, Internet Marketing Used To Find Steve Fossett” to gain traffic to their article, since those are the most frequently searched keywords on Google. Dancing Camel puts Israeli Beer on the MapFunny Camel, Serious Beer - that’s the motto of Dancing Camel brewery, Israel’s only microbrewery, that will be releasing a special pomegranate beer this year for the Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) holidays.

David Cohen, Dancing Camel’s founder, was living the Jewish-American dream. Born and raised in Brooklyn, David was a CPA with his own firm, a house in the burbs, 3 kids, and even the family dog. But Cohen had a dream, and wanted out of what he terms the “suburban white collar lifestyle.” Cohen dreamed of opening a microbrewery in Israel which would enable him to combine his two great loves - beer and the holy land. Since visiting Israel at the age of 20, Cohen had always imagined himself returning to stay. Now, more than 20 year later, he has finally made it happen. Read more»
