I’m sure Fiddy Cent (50 Cent) would be proud of his tzitzit-wearing followers from Bnei Brak, Israel, who released an album of Yiddish cover songs which includes a Jew-i-fied version of his hit song, “In Da Club”. These cover versions are rated G, as the original lyrics are replaced with family-appropriate lyrics with a Jewish theme. You can listen to some samples on the Ynet site (best with Internet Explorer). This album has stirred major controversy in Israel and has been deemed inappropriate by some major Israeli Rabbis who have proposed a label on the album “Not for sale to haredim”. If this cd is controversial, they should stay far far away from 50Cent’s music videos.
Watch out Tumbalalaika, Yiddish Rap is in. My take: No harm in trying to put a little life into this otherwise dying language.
Vos Machstu (What’s up in Yiddish). The only phrase I can remember from 2 semesters of Yiddish.
