Jacob Richman, the ever-active guy behind the very useful CJI (Computer Jobs in Israel) mailing list and his directory of all things Israeli, has developed a new facebook app that lets you add your Hebrew name to your profile fittingly called My Hebrew Name. All you have to do is add the app, enter your Hebrew name in English letters, and it adds a box to your profile with how your name is spelled in Hebrew. Here’s mine:

I like it because I think that the beauty of a Hebrew name is the fact that it’s Hebrew. It’s not quite the same when written out in English letters. If you don’t have a Hebrew name, it suggests a bunch of Hebrew names that are similar, or just chooses one for you. I tried Sally, and got Sarah, and Edward gave me a whole list of results, including avigdor, efrat, shimra, and yachdiel. Shimra? Yachdiel?! Those are not exactly on the “Most popular Jewish names” list, that’s for sure.
Jacob explains why he developed this facebook app:
Many people over the years have emailed me asking how to write their Hebrew name. I decided to create a database / website of Hebrew names and in October 2007 the database was interfaced with Facebook.
The database contains thousands of Hebrew names and it also contains thousands of English names linked to the Hebrew names.
Many English names correspond in some way to their Hebrew names. Sometimes, the name is exactly the same or an Anglicized version of the same name: David, Michael or Sarah are as good in Hebrew as they are in English, though they are pronounced differently.
There are English names that may have more than one Hebrew name possibility. An example would be the name Jon which can be in Hebrew: Yehonatan or Yonatan.
If you do not know your Hebrew name or there is no direct translation of your name, the database will give you name suggestions based on popular usage. There is no law or custom that your chosen Hebrew name must correspond to your English name.
