Approximately 240, 000 Holocaust survivors live in Israel today. Many lack money for medicine, psychological support and in some cases, food. Many people and organizations joined forces to plan a protest to demand more support for the Holocaust survivors living in Israel, so many of them in poverty.
Over 2,000 people showed to this protest today in Jerusalem. Many believe that survivors should receive an extra NIS 1,000 per month instead of the current budgeted NIS 83 extra for 2008.
Following the protest, an emergency meeting was held by lawmakers to try to meet survivors’ demands.
A new plan to help the survivors live a more dignified life will be drafted by officials from the Welfare and Social Services and Finance Ministries, as well as MKs.
It looks like survivors and those supporting them in their struggle have forced people to listen.
