With the latest numbers out of Israelis serving in the army, or more importantly, the percentage of Israelis not serving, there is much debate as to the severity of the situation.
25 percent of Israelis don’t serve. But only 5% are actual army dodgers. The rest are exempt for legal reasons. For example, most ultra-Orthodox do not serve, arabs and, of course, people living outside of Israel do not serve.
Still, in a country that relies so heavily on its military for existence, it is scary to think that dodging army service is not the taboo it used to be in Israel.
And yet, in the Lebanon war last summer, record numbers of reservists wanted to fight against Hezbollah gorillas.
Maybe people only want to serve in out-right wars. Maybe people only want to serve when they aren’t being “forced” to. In the next few months and years we’ll be able to see exactly what directions Israelis’ attitudes towards serving go.
