Even the overpowering odor of cow manure is not enough to repel the herds of people lining up to become members of the newly restructured kibbutzim in Israel. The New York Times reports that Kibbutzim are dealing with the threat that if they don’t evolve the socialism that the kibbutzim were founded on, certain kibbutzim might not survive.
Faced with the threat of sink or swim, some kibbutzim are starting to change the structure and philosophy to reflect human nature’s growing need for incentives to work harder and the desire to own property or belongings. In these kibbutzim, members will start to earn different wages, depending on their jobs in the kibbutz. The socialism spirit can still be felt by the help extended to those earning less the opportunity to pay less kibbutz taxes.
Hopefully this new and improved makeover will bring a revival that the kibbutz movement so desperately needs.
